Morrissey’s “Boxers,” Not The Briefs!

As a kid, I once paid $10.99 for this 3 song import by Morrissey.  Now, as an adult, I paid $0.99!  What a bargain, especially for these three great tunes!  If you listen closely, it sounds like Moz has a cold on “Boxers,” which always gave the vocals such a sensitive feel.  You couple that with the fact that he’s singing about a boxer who is dealing with a ton of loss, and you’ve got a winner.  The song begins with, the boxer, “losing in front of your home crowd.”  Later, his wife tires of his career, and leaves him behind.  The nasal cold that Morrissey is going through runs parallel to the chilling life of the boxer, making this song, and this single a classic.  Both of the b-sides rock as well, which wasn’t always the case at this point in the Mozzer’s career.  “Have-A-Go Merchant” and Whatever Happens, I Love You,” both can hold water, but the latter song is the sleeper.  Complete with high-pitched horns and some eerie vocal phrasing, this is a b-side you can’t miss.  Scour the cut-outs my friends, ’cause for a buck, I got the UK version!

Morrissey “Boxers”

Losing in front of your home crowd
You wish the ground
Would open up and take you down
And will time never pass ?
Will time never pass for us ?

Your weary wife is walking away
Your nephew is true
Well, he thinks the world of you
And I have to close my eyes
Oh …

Losing in front of your home town
The crowd call your name
They love you all the same
The sound, the smell, and the spray
You will take them all away
And they’ll stay
Till the grave

Your weary wife is walking away
Your nephew, is true
Well, he thinks the world of you
And I have to close my eyes
Oh …

Losing in your home town
Hell is the bell
That will not ring again
You will return one day
Because of all the things that you see
When your eyes close

Your weary wife – walking away
Your nephew, it’s true
He still thinks the world of you
And I have to dry my eyes
Oh …

“Whatever Happens, I Love You”
