I procrastinated. The Big Pink sold out Empty Bottle last night. I tried to call all day, figuring I would just jump a cab around 10pm and skip the first 2 bands, but there was no answer. I finally got through at 9:45pm, and the guy says “Yeah, all sold out!” What’s new? We live in a world where word of mouth spreads like wild fire, even faster thanks to high-speed internet. No band is small anymore, how many times have I had to learn the hard way!? I just did with Butch Walker two weeks ago, and now last night! More like the BIG STINK! Oh well, I will see them in the future, just got myself excited for the show, and the ‘Bottle is a great venue! No polish, just all grit and sound. It’s a very small bar, so almost everything sells out there. Just thought with Thanksgiving this weekend, there wouldn’t be as many people around, and really thought they were still under the radar. Shows you how much I know. I guess being signed to 4AD was the first signifier, a label steeped in history of distinguished artists. Either way, if you haven’t heard The Big Pink, they are worth checking out. They have a big sound, with lots of great beats and hooks to boot. The lead singer has a thick, catchy voice, that sometimes reminds me of Ian Brown from the ‘Roses, and sometimes Richard Ashcroft from The Verve. It’s very british, and evokes a lot of older Brit Pop. Anyways, I fell asleep listening to “A Brief History of Love,” hearing ‘It’s all over tonight…, ‘ and picturing the stage. Imagination is a great thing. Hopefully they hit up Schuba’s next time through.
