"Oh Tall Tree In My Ear"I love me some Roman Candle, that’s for sure. Somewhere in between Ryan Adams (who they’ve played with) and the Tragically Hip (who lead singer Skip Matheny sometimes reminds me of ) lies a rock band that isn’t quite country, but doesn’t mind suggesting that sometimes. I study my favorite record stores, stalk them some might say. I know what new promos have dropped into the cut out’s this week, and I know the ones that still reside there, waiting for a new home. A few years back one of my favorite records, “The Wee Hours” was from Roman Candle, and largely due to their song “Winterlight,” which I could not get out of my head for weeks! I missed them when they toured, but never forgot about them. When I went back to Reckless yesterday, I found the latest record by Roman Candle called “Oh Tall Tree in The Ear” just sitting in the bins, calling for me. I was jacked, though I had a couple of other great finds, this was my favorite and most anticipated. Upon throwing it in the CD player and getting my first listen I was happy to hear they were still that great band I fell in love with a while back! Genuine, melodic, upbeat, and simply happy rock ‘n roll. From the jumpy opener of “Eden Was A Garden,” to the cool graces of “Sonnet 46,” all the way home to the rockiness of “Early Aubade,” it’s all here. There are also some mellow, eclectic tunes on here that I dig, like “They Say,” and “Woke Up This Morning.” These guys/girls are great! There is a little something here for everybody, and just a great listen overall. I can see myself throwing this on a lot in the fall too, as the leaves drop, and the colors take over. Can’t wait to see them at Schuba’s on August 30th, it’s been a long time coming.
