Big Discovery

The Kid ventured back to an old haunt on Thursday morning, when he made his way over to the new Reckless Records.  The only reason why I say new,  is because the location has changed.  It’s still on the same street, Broadway, and kitty-corner from the old location, just in a newer building.  Don’t get it twisted, they still have all the snobby workers, playing vinyl cuts that people like me “just can’t appreciate!?”  At least that’s how they make a simpleton like me feel, but whatever.  I was stunned to find a newer, better version of the dollar bin at Reckless, that same great Bastien where the Cut Out Kid once went to graze!  This time around I was smitten by the CD’s that I found in the cut out bin, everything thing from old skool John Mellencamp, to brand new, day old drops  of Discovery!!!  Since I was the only freak casing the “cut outs,’” I said to myself, “Awesome, been hearing about this record for weeks now!” There it was, a spankin’ new promotional copy of the debut record by Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend and Wes Miles from Ra Ra Riot, entitled “LP,” which actually just hit stores a day before.  Apparently, the two were friends and had been recording together since 2005, but had to part ways after both of their bands had become a bit more serious.  Anyway, I scored that and a bunch of other good stuff I will list tomorrow.  But while we are on the subject of Discovery, they do a fun cover of the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back.”  It has all the sounds of the moment like the autotune/vocoder thing,  and lots of synths, but still has the soul of the original song.  Check it out, it’s addicting, just like the rest of this fun filled, beat driven, synth soaked escapade.  That’s a big thumbs up from the ‘Kid!
