Bully & Blondshell Team Up on “Docket”

Two of the strongest female vocalists in the game team up for a monster summer jam called, “Docket.” Though it was released in the tail end of March, it’s been on repeat since it dropped and now feels like the single of the summer for me. The hook is incredible, and the guitars, while starting melodic and airy, end up getting a bit grungy and ratchet the whole rocking vibe up to “11!”

As the story goes, Sabrina Teitelbaum, or Blondshell, was recording the song in the studio and kept hearing Bully’s voice in the playback. So she decided to reach out Alicia Bognanno and see if she’d like to guest on the track. “I’m a huge fan of Sabrina, I think she is incredible and I was over the moon that she asked me to be a part of her song. It makes me really happy seeing so many musicians in our indie world supporting and admiring one another. So thank you Sabrina and special shout out to her dog who I am a massive fan of as well.”

Fans are now calling for an EP or a full album since the release of this single and I couldn’t agree more. Both women are great songwriters and singers, so I can only imagine how good a collaboration of this magnitude would be. For now, we have a truthful missive about how hard it is to stay true to your partner while out on the road touring. There’s a man that she’s interested in but feels bad because she’s in a relationship and has someone at home.

“I said, “Don’t shake my hand, it’s wet”/ He said, “I’ll kiss it instead”

He said, “I saw the whole show/I’m not scared of the sweat”
But I’m scared of the touching/I have someone at home

And I want his body more/When he leaves me alone”

This is a lot different from “I want to rock and roll all night, and party every day.” The writer is struggling with wanting to cheat and feels genuinely guilty for having these thoughts. “Isn’t it wrong? When I’m gone/I look around at the options. I put men on the docket.”

In the chorus of the song she says that her partner should be “with someone who’s more in love,” not someone like her who’s “eating for free. My worst nightmare is me.” That’s the line of the song, where she turns this dilemma back on herself. She admits that if the shoe were on the other foot, SHE would be her worst nightmare. Taking advantage of the situation of being in a different city and seeing all the options while her partner is being monogamous at home.

Give me a curse, I caught a bug/He should be with someone who’s more in love,
Not someone eating for free/My worst nightmare is me

Great songs have great lyrics, and with “Docket,” this is the case. Teitelbaum takes on a subject that isn’t normally written about, or not this frank. Yes, there are a lot of songs about heartbreak, making mistakes, and cheating, but “Docket” is the precursor, and that’s why I love it. Sabrina has an awareness and honesty to her writing that we’ve seen with the incredible single, “Sepsis.”

“For me this is a song about splitting off from yourself,” Teitelbaum said in a statement. “It’s about uncertainty when you’re in different environments all the time. In a way it’s about wanting to cope with distance and change but it’s also just a bit about being reckless. I had space on this song for another person and I kept hearing Bully’s voice on it. I’m a huge fan of hers and when I was touring last summer I couldn’t stop listening to her album. Honestly when we were sitting in the studio and I heard her voice coming through, I was just kind of shocked and in awe of her. I’m really happy she said yes to making the song with me.”

Who knows where this collaboration leads, but for now it has given us the single of the summer. Let’s ROCK!
