Fires Burn @ The Hall (5-31-11)

“Live Those Days Tonight”

If you happen to miss the Friendly Fires when they bring their live set through town, you’re also missing one huge dance party.  Lead singer Ed Macfarlane is not afraid to get his groove on, making it hard for anyone in the house not to find theirs.  Ed is an amazing singer, who has a ton of confidence, and this shines through in his vocals and in his dance.  He makes fronting the Friendly Fires seem effortless, and of course, really fun.  The latter of which rubs off on the audience, and it’s great to witness and be part of.  Last night’s energetic crowd was all smiles as they played the majority of their debut album, and a good portion of the new one, “Pala.”

If I could sum up the sound for anyone unfamiliar with FF, I would say it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of dance-rock.  The bass player acts as a second drummer on many of the tracks, making many of the songs sound massive and tribal.  There are oceans of synths,  great guitar leads, and soaring vocals that explode into big hooks.  The quintessential example of this would be the fan favorite, off their first album, “Paris.”  Here is a really cool remix…

Friendly Fires – “Paris” (Kwest remix)

It can’t be much longer before FF move onto bigger venues, as their style is suited for such things.  For now, there is no where better to see them then in the local dance or concert hall.

This song “Hurting” was played at the show, and is a stand out from the latest record “Pala.”  This version is a really cool remix that I selfishly added to this post, only because it’s a sped up version of the funkdafied jam!
