The Freelance Whales live set is packed full of energy, big harmonies, and carefully placed instrumentation. They play with confidence and have the sheen of a well polished machine, though they have only been playing as a band for 3 short years. I patiently waited for this album to drop, after seeing them twice, and was very happy with the result. The ‘Whales do not reinvent the wheel, on Weathervanes, but they did make some exquisite pop, that is simply irresistible. So much so in fact that, just months after this release, you were hearing their songs in TV commercials and prime time dramas. The song that really brought me into the fold was “Generator-First Floor,” which you can hear below. Just a great pop song that meanders joyfully along to a frolicking banjo. It’s hard not to sing along, though there seems to be no true chorus. Maybe that’s the charm of it?
“Hannah,” “Starring,” and “We Could Be Friends,” all are favorites of mine, but the album should be heard as one big song, and listened to from start to finish. Don’t be afraid…this isn’t a long journey. The album is short and pleasant, and actually rushes right by.
