“How’m I gonna see/Where you coming from/If you keep, keeping me in the dark.” In The Dark, is a straight forward rock album, in every sense of the word. It comes complete with big, hooky choruses, gigantic guitars, and gargantuan guitar riffs. The Whigs toured endlessly in ’08 and in ’09, and these songs show the maturity of a road tested band. They are rock anthems, about falling in love and breaking up. All the while wondering who they really are, and what they want to be. “Someone’s Daughter,” “Kill Me Carolyne,” and “Hundred/ Million” are the respective songs I was previously describing, and these are just three of the eleven gems on In The Dark. The thing that is most notable about this album though, is the warmth of the production. From start to finish, this disc frigging rocks; the songs sound full. The drums are thick and pulsating and the guitars are heavy and layered. There is a ton of bass, but it’s not overwhelming, it grooves and thumps in the background. Warm is the only way to describe it. No matter what system you play this CD on, the music just engulfs you. Hats off to producer Ben Allen for just the right gain, in an age of digital loss.
