The Sprawl (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

“They heard me singing and they told me to stop/Quit these pretentious things, and just punch the clock”

You need to watch this video; especially if you didn’t see Arcade Fire perform this live on SNL.  Something magical happens!  First off, the driving rhythm of the song pulls you in.  Forget all of the flashing costumes, focus on the woman front and center.  She is Régine Chassagne, and she nails this performance!  By the end of it, I was falling in love with her.  She exudes sexiness, through the way in which she carries herself.  She is confident, and she is proud.  This combination of attributes make her sexy.  In her Debra Harry, “Heart of Glass” type moment, she shines!  Even more, Régine steals the show from husband Win Butler, who will eventually come down to kiss her cheek as the song ends.  Another amazing moment in this performance.  That simple piece of humanity and dignity that he showed his wife, made me smile!  All by myself in my living room at midnight.  I had on my face, the biggest shit eating grin a person could have!  Win was so proud of his wife, that he didn’t’ let the trappings of stardom get in the way of showing her just how awesome she was.  It was touching.  This truly was an example of greatness, seldom seen.  Frankly, I have a new favorite song.

Debra Harry, “Heart of Glass”

Also, I forgot to mention that the coolest part of this song are the lyrics.  She is talking about getting out and leaving “The Sprawl.”  Living in the middle of “dead shopping malls,” where people preach the impossibility of reaching your dreams.  They want to squash your dreams, because they haven’t achieved theirs.  “They heard me singing and they told me to stop/Quit these pretentious things, and just punch the clock/These days my life, I feel it has no purpose/But late at night these feelings swim to the surface/Sometimes I wonder if the world’s so small/That we could never get away from the sprawl.” As you watch Régine singing at the end of this performance, you can see the conviction in her face.  You will also notice how enraptured the band is.  She is breathing thoughts of getting away from a place that is killing her soul.  She is yearning for something more.  On this night, she has achieved it.
