I decide to wear a new pair of sandals to the show and ended up with two twisted and blistered feet. That was the only bad decision of the night. The best decision I made was going to a midnight show on Sunday night to see the Local Natives, when I had to be at work at 4:30am. But, neither lack of sleep or bloody feet could stop me from moving to the beat, as this group played with the rhythm of the saints. The room was packed, full of energy, and the band was near euphoric. I don’t remember the set list and that’s not really important here. The important part was the well crafted songs, 3 part harmonies, and tribal drum beats that had the audience up out of their seats and mesmerized by music. There were many peaks and valleys throughout the night and this was nuanced by the two drummers. It wasn’t overpowering, just very rhythmic, and percussive. To the listener, it created an underlying pulse that drove the songs, while creating open spaces for the vocals. The vocals were sweeping over soaring guitars, while each player weaved melodies around each other, never stepping on the others foot. This is the reason we go to shows, to see such energy and passion for the music we love. I left listening to “Airplanes” on repeat, with a shit-eating grin the size of New York! Looks like the ‘Kid found his latest obsession.
