Matt Beringer said that when The National started recording their new record, “High Violet,” they hung a poster in the studio which had one word written on it. That one word was “Happiness.” Apparently some people around Matt were hoping this would help him write happy songs, but I think it’s safe to say, it didn’t work. That poster was eventually taken down, and the madness of sadness ensued. Honestly, all joking aside, this is a good thing! After listening again to The National’s latest installment, I am starting to think that “High Violet” could be the unhappiest thing they’ve done yet. Like I said, this makes for great listening, and creates a sound that grows on the listener with each revolution. Subtle lines and phrases become hooks and choruses. Lines that once were almost undecipherable, are now discerning melodies that I can’t stop singing. This type of listening may not be your typical fanfare. Most people don’t have the patience or time, and many listeners want instant gratification. Regardless, all these little nuances eventually become hugely addicting, and you find yourself seeking out lyrics to see what Beringer is saying. This is the beauty of The National. They have traded in power ballads, for something akin to mini rock novels. Each a progression that might be the equivalent of a winding climb up the side of a steep hill. If you take that drive though, the payoff for the listener is huge. Matt Beringer has the type of baritone that could lull you to sleep, if you are not paying attention. But, once you are aware of his lyrics and paying attention, you become a prisoner, by choice, along for the journey. His voice drags you into these brooding thoughts on life, and these perceptions, that a lot of times seem sad. Matt has a dark way of explaining himself, though I wouldn’t say his songs are depressing. Rather, I would say these nuggets of descriptive thought that The National flesh out, are uplifting, providing hope in the end. The National’s “High Violet,” is a gem. But it takes awhile to discover this diamond in the rough. Stick with it, you’ll enjoy the ride.
