I’m sitting at home on a Sunday night, with the TV tuned to 120 minutes. This black and white video of a young, rocking band comes on the screen, and my life is changed indefinitely. I grabbed a copy of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin’s “God Fodder” LP from the cut out bins last week, for $1, and it brought back a millions‘ worth of great memories. Three different shows at the Metro, lots of money spent on 3-song imports, and a lot of blurry rides to and from the city. Don’t forget about the drunken high school house parties where we all moshed to “Kill Your Television,” as we just couldn’t get over how hip and cool we were. We were hip because we had the hair cuts and the concert T’s, and cool because “Ned’s” was our band, and no one else knew who they were. Ahhh…what memories. If you never head of this band, or this amazing record, hit me up and I’ll get you the album. These guys perfected the edgy, alternative, punky pop music that defined that 90’s (to me that is). “Happy,” “Kill Your Television,” and “Until You Find Out” were fast paced pop singles, but the whole outing rocked from start to finish. Even better in concert. John had a great, melodic voice, that bellowed atop TWO bass players, a searing guitarist, and “Dan Dan the fast drumming man.” The songs had a heavier edge, due to the distorted guitars, and the high- speed drumming. The bass playing kept the music really melodic, creating the perfect canvas for John to paint his angst ridden masterpieces. He wrote about growing up, falling in love, and trying to figure out who your place in the world, and as a teenager with a lot of anger, the lyrics spoke volumes to me. A must listen for any fan of good, genuine music. I just love the things that turn up if you look close enough.
By the way, as I was writing this, I became obsessed with this band again, and have been googling the hell out of them. It seems they have reunited, playing together in 2009 and are now selling a really rare 3-disc live set. Too much!
