‘Contra’ry to the Hype

"I think you're a contra"

Don’t believe the hype, or should I say, “hate?” Don’t hate, just believe the hype!  Wait…what am I trying to say?  I hated these guys because of the hype, so I am trying to tell you to give the music a chance before you judge the band.  Many of you already have chosen the music (the sheep that you are), and this band has exploded.  But there is still a general perception that VW is just a bunch of Ivy League brats.  I couldn’t believe any band could be as good as every blogger on earth was saying three years ago, it was all too good to be true.  Then these punks get SIGNED from a “Blue CDR,” and now I’m really put off.  After all, most of what was initially available at the time, was just reviews.  The only way to get the music, was to ILLEGALLY download the shit!  That is until, of course, they got signed, put the record out proper, and became the biggest over night, flavor of the month sensation, we’d all seen before.  So I thought.  Anyways, we’ve moved on to the sophomore record and it’s better than the first.  Huh?  Yep, believe the hype!!!  This amazing 10 song album by a little known band called Vampire Weekend continues to blow my mind, day in and day out (no exclamation point needed.)  It’s great (here’s the exclamation point:)!  I actually went out and BOUGHT the CD yesterday.  I tweeted about it, I read the lyrics, and I also, god forbid, burned a couple copies for the car and my friends:).  I love “Taxi Cab,” it is soooooooooo Paul Simon!  But their whole album is sooo Paul Simon!  It’s so smooth, and it has this incredible vibe.  The instrumentation is great, but I’m not going to whine on and on about that like some blogging fan boy.  What I love is how short and sweet this record is.  No filler, just right to the point on every track.  From rock to funk and ska to punk, there are so many styles on this record that keep it moving and grooving.  Throw in a little madness, a bit of urgency, and  all of the feelings that we call life.  It’s all weaved in and out of this crazy little whirlwind of a record called “Contra.” Did I say I like this album, and that I can’t stop singing each and every song?  I did…I do. And, I paid more than a dollar for it.   Cut-Kid-Out!
