If any band at the moment is the “it” band, then by all means, the guys from Surfer Blood have just been tagged! I have NEVER seen the doors of Schuba’s kept open by dozens of people trying to get into a room that was definitely oversold! They started out slow, but really brought the goods as the show progressed through their hour set. I was glad they opened with the slower “Anchorage,” but it seemed to bore the crowd, who thought they were there to see the return of Christ. They played the bulk of “Astrocoast,” including my favorites “Floating Vibes,” and “Fast Jabroni,” which both sounded perfect, even better live! “Catholic Pagans,” and “Take it Easy” were great and they ended with the reverb rocking, “Swim,” which was spot on! All in all, it was a good show, I thought these kids were pretty solid, but others I talked to, disagreed. Seems that some people were just expecting too much. It’s hard to be “amazing” when the hype surrounding your first album exceeds the simplicity of it. The expectations of such a young band were set way too high. Surfer Blood have been touring like mad, and they looked tired, but still sounded good. There were no smoke and mirrors, just five guys (er kids), jamming the songs they wrote that make up their catchy, surf sounding debut.
