Dent May “When You Were Mine (Live at Schuba’s Tavern, 11-10-09)”
Just like the first and the second time, seeing Dent May live at Schuba’s for the 3rd time in twelve months was charming to say the least! The barbershop boy came armed with his amazing ukulele, and played another round of classics off of his debut record “The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele.” He played through “Howard,” “The Girls on the Square,” “Paris,” “26 Miles,” and the crowd rocker,“You Can’t Force a Dance Party!” He also played some obscure tracks like his Prince cover of “When You Were Mine,” off his “Brush With Velvet” EP, which has become my latest addiction (I didn’t even realize this song was a cover until I heard the twin duo Tegan and Sarah playing it on their LP “Songs For Christoff,” and did some research). Dent played his acoustic on “Eastover Wives” and said that he was going to be playing more acoustic on his new record, which is still a ways off. It was just him and his percussionist (Bobby Chizz) this time around, and they both were very candid and friendly with the audience. Schuba’s Tavern could possibly be the perfect venue to see a show, and Dent might just be the best musician to see perform there! If you get a chance to see this guy, by all means, get to steppin’!
